FAQ
What fuel does the RoamFlame use?
The RoamFlame uses isopropyl alcohol as its fuel source. 90% or higher works best, but 70% will work too, it will just produce smaller flames.
Where can I buy fuel?
Isopropyl alcohol is available at many stores: Big box stores, grocery stores, drug stores, etc. You likely won't have a problem finding any & you can pick it up during regular stops for supplies, no special trip to a filling station needed.
How do I light the RoamFlame?
- Open and remove the lid (from behind the hinge side of the RoamFlame, slide the hinge to the right to detach it).
- Pour isopropyl alcohol directly into the RoamFlame, through the grate (up to 4 32oz bottles).
- Allow the iso alcohol to soak into the fuel medium (you should not see any standing liquid).
- Using a grill lighter or torch, light the RoamFlame by holding the lighter or torch to the grate.
Can I cook over the fire?
Not over the open flame, it'll make your food taste like isopropyl alcohol. You can however cook in a pan over the fire. Just be aware that the fire produces a fair amount of soot.
Where do I find fuel for the RoamFlame?
Isopropyl alcohol is available just about everywhere. Grocery stores, drug stores, big box stores, general stores, etc. You likely won't have trouble finding fuel.
Can I use other liquid fuels?
No. The RoamFlame is only intended to be used with isopropyl alcohol.
What % isopropyl alcohol should I use?
90% or above will work best. You can use 70%, the flames will just be slightly smaller. Anything less than 70% is not recommended.
Should I fill it all the way up?
While the RoamFlame will hold appx. 4 32oz bottles of isopropyl alcohol (1 gallon), you may have a better experience just adding a bottle at a time as needed. Just be sure to extinguish the flames fully before adding more iso alcohol.
How do I store the RoamFlame?
Make sure the lid is closed and that it has cooled down & store it in a dry place.
Can I store it with isopropyl alcohol in it?
Yes, but you may lose a small amount of fuel to evaporation through the safety vent depending on how long you're storing it. It's best to use up as much fuel as possible before long term storage.
My RoamFlame has fuel in it from previous use, how do I relight it?
You can just add more iso alcohol, and light as normal, which will draw the iso alcohol already in the RoamFlame towards the top as it burns.
If you don't want to add more iso alcohol: With the lid closed, flip the RoamFlame upside down and let it sit for 3-5 minutes to allow the iso alcohol to move back towards the top. Then flip it back over, remove the lid and light.
How do I put it out?
The easiest way is with the included fire blanket. Simply flip the blanket over the top of the flames to extinguish. You should always use the RoamFlame sitting on the fire blanket. At minimum the fire blanket should be kept nearby while using the RoamFlame.
You can also use the lid to extinguish it, however this is more difficult as you will need to reattach the lid hinge first, then close the lid, while behind the hinge side, holding the lid closed for 20-30 seconds to ensure that the fire is out.
How do I add more fuel during use?
DO NOT add more fuel while there is an active fire in the RoamFlame. Ensure that the fire is completely extinguished, then slowly pour more isopropyl alcohol into the fuel medium through the grate. Use caution as the grate will be hot so the isopropyl alcohol will sizzle and a little will evaporate when it hits the grate. Wait for at least 1 minute after adding more fuel to allow any vapors to dissipate. Use a grill lighter to relight the RoamFlame, be aware that it will light quickly.
